Dopo aver annunciato un giro di vite contro le pratiche ingannevoli per i consumatori, l'UE ha condotto un'indagine a tappeto su oltre 300 siti che offrono servizi per cellulari.
Finora 54 siti sono stati chiusi e altri 159 "ripuliti", vale a dire costretti a correggere pratiche contrarie EU law on consumer protection. Within the context of the Italian authorities fined nine content providers and mobile operators for a total of 2 million euro.
sites were among the 558 initially tested during a week in June 2008: an operation carried out simultaneously in 27 EU countries plus Norway and Iceland. These are sites that sell content for mobile phones such as ringtones, wallpapers, logos, games and subscriptions to chat services.
The investigation was triggered after hundreds of complaints, especially from parents who were left with astronomical phone bills because the children had unwittingly subscribed to a ringtone or other service. Many of these sites take it targeted young people.
The survey was conducted with the second action by governments across Europe. In 2007 the 15 EU countries and Norway have conducted a similar investigation on sites that sell airline tickets.
European Commissioner for Consumers Meglena Kuneva confirmed that others will follow. "The results show that cooperation at European level can make a real difference when it comes to cleaning up a market for consumers."
The market for mobile services phones is growing and reflects the success of these phones. In 2007 the value of the ring-tone sales in Europe were estimated at € 691 million, including sales on the Internet.
Austria, Hungary and Romania recorded the highest number of sites in violation of consumer protection laws: 21 per country. France and Lithuania there were 20, followed by Belgium, Norway and the Netherlands, respectively 18, 17 and 16.
Among the companies fined in Italy Italy include Telecom, Vodafone, Fox Mobile, and all for free.
